The arts are valuable in and of themselves, but there is ample research to
support another benefit of the arts: They enhance academic performance. By requiring
children to use all of their senses in the creation and appreciation of art, we’re
giving them the chance to think divergently and express themselves in new and
exciting ways. Kalamazoo County has a long history of supporting arts education
in our schools. The arts are one of the core curricula, receiving equal emphasis
with language, mathematics, science and world studies. Arts programs sponsored by
the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo strive to engage children in a variety of
ways, including participation, study and analysis of arts in different cultures.
